Why Do Most Software Engineers Prefer MacBooks?
Here are five reasons why I think so.
MacBooks aren’t the cheapest laptops, and you certainly do not need them for programming as you can accomplish the same thing (aside from publishing iOS/macOS Apps) with a cheaper laptop. Then why do so many people still prefer these laptops over the various other more affordable options? I asked some fellow software engineers why they like using MacBooks, and I will discuss some interesting points they brought up that I agree with.
The Apple Ecosystem
The Apple Ecosystem was the most common answer that I had received, and I see why. Being in the Apple Ecosystem allows sharing files and documents very quickly with others with AirDrop. Suppose you have other Apple devices like an iPhone or an iPad. All your information is synced on the cloud so that you can access it anytime and anywhere. Finally, we developers love our headphones, and the ability to have one pair of headphones that can easily switch from one device to another automatically makes the workflow even smoother.
The Operating System
One of the advantages of macOS is that it has a straightforward and more streamlined user interface. The workflow is very similar to operating systems that are on the iPhones and iPads, from downloading apps to going through and managing your files and documents. The software integrates with the hardware seamlessly as well. Apple creates its software and hardware, which makes using their machines much more enjoyable and gives them an advantage over other companies that do not do the same.
Reliability
MacBooks tend to last a very long time without having any issues over the years of usage. Some of the engineers I spoke with are using Macs that came out in 2016 and even 2015! They’re not Apple fanatics and just need the machine to get their work done. They are only now considering buying a new MacBook as Apple will be discontinuing their Intel-based Macs and replacing them with their new M1 Macs.
Design
